Crowns and bridges are dental solutions for restoration. They can be used for a lot of purposes. Teeth with severe caries destruction sometimes need crowns. Also teeth after endodontic treatment need crowns as well. Sometimes we want to achieve full change of the smile. Then we place crowns on all teeth in the visible area. Bridges are used to replace missing teeth when there is no option to place an implant or this is the choice of the patient. Also we make bridges on implants when there are more missing teeth. We make crowns and bridges of three materials – porcelain fused to metal, porcelain fused to zirconium and e.max.
Porcelain fused to metal
These type of crowns and bridges have a base of chrome cobalt alloy. On this base is placed porcelain. The chrome cobalt alloy has a very low risk of allergies and great strength.
Porcelain fused to zirconium
This type of prosthodontics have a different technology. The base is made of zirconium dioxide. On CAD/CAM machine is made the base. The ceramic is then placed. This type of crowns and bridges have the same transparency like the natural teeth. They have greater aesthetics than porcelain fused to metal.
e.max
This type of crowns and bridges are made by computer – CAD/CAM. This is only ceramic material in shape of blocks. The construction is designed on computer and then the machine burs the e.max block and the final construction comes out almost ready. After that final preparations are made and it is ready to be cemented. Crowns and bridges made of this material are very aesthetic and look like natural teeth.
